Promoting a sustainable and inclusive economy

ArcelorMittal Brasil actively participates in associations, both in Brazil and abroad, that gather other companies that seek increasingly more sustainable ways for their businesses and for the steelmaking business in particular.

To ensure the promotion of a more sustainable and more inclusive economy, the Company has partnered with universities, research institutions and other industrial sectors to promote studies and processes for technological updates, new uses for its products and the sustainable management of its businesses.

These partnerships may take place with such institutions as the Instituto Aço Brasil (IABr – Brazil Steel Institute), Instituto ETHOS de Empresas e Responsabilidade Social (ETHOS Institute of Companies and Social Responsibility) or the Conselho Empresarial Brasileiro para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (CEBDS – Brazilian Business Board for Sustainable Development).

ArcelorMittal Brasil was one of the first Brazilian companies to be a signatory to the Global Pact, a UN-led voluntary initiative, to foster the creation of a more sustainable and more inclusive economy, based on ten key principles derived from:

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
  • ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work;
  • Rio Declaration on Environment and Sustainability;
  • UN Convention against Corruption.

Principle 1

Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and

make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Principle 3

Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Principle 4

the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;

Principle 5

the effective abolition of child labor; and

Principle 6

the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Principle 7

Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;

undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and

Principle 9

encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Principle 10

Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

The Company also seeks to meet requirements from the Eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - or Eight Ways to Change the World – which sum up the set of goals established by the United Nations in 2000 to make the planet more human, solidary, supportive and sustainable, without impairment to the economic development. They foresee voluntary work and large-scale involvement of the private sector, which must act by means of entrepreneurial citizenship actions until 2015.
