Another step to build Battery 4 at Tubarão
ArcelorMittal Tubarão has started to assemble the refractories for the Battery 4 project. The celebration of this milestone in the company history took place yesterday (22/10) and brought together part of the leadership, the teams involved in the work and contractor’s representatives.
As a symbolic act, the first refractory brick was laid - out of the 15,000 tons of blocks that will form the coke oven batteries at Tubarão. As a tribute to the dedication of the teams involved, the bricks had messages written by the employees.
Started in June 2019, the works went through difficult times such as the Covic-19 pandemic, but the workers’ dedication made all the difference. It is worth mentioning that the project is part of the Evoluir Program, representing a relevant contribution to the environmental management area.
The initiative is also a major event for the local generation of jobs. In order to qualify professionals, the partner company RIP developed a school to qualify refractory bricklayers. The action had the support of Sine, from Serra.
The complex refractory assembly of the 49 ovens may take approximately 40 weeks. When ready the battery will have a production capacity of 600 thousand tons of coke per year.
Safety first
Seven professionals from partner companies were acknowledged during the event. They received a certificate for being an example in Health and Safety care. ArcelorMittal Tubarão has reached the milestone of 700 thousand MH worked without accidents.
