Environmental control actions at Tubrão
The Environment is one of ArcelorMittal Tubarão priorities, which continuously invests in the improvement of its environmental controls in order to achieve increasingly sustainable production processes.
From small solutions to big projects, the company seeks to value actions that strengthen the environmental management. See below two initiatives that are already part of the routine to control air emissions.
Polymer Spraying Automated System: applied over the Coal Yard piles, the polymer forms a protective layer against the wind to prevent fugitive emissions. After the implementation of the system, the sprayers are activated automatically and the polymers sprayed over the coal piles whenever they are moved, making the process more reliable. The spray operation is recorded in reports making it possible to confirm when the polymer was reapplied to each pile, reinforcing the environmental control in this area of the company. The action is even more essential during periods of draught and strong winds as in the summer (our current season) to prevent fugitive emissions caused by the wind.
Fitosoil: the spraying system used on the internal roads includes a polymer, known as Fitosoil, which works as a dust suppressor to prevent the resuspension of dust particles caused by the traffic of vehicles and the wind. Fitosoil was successfully tested, especially on paved roads, and implemented in November 2019. The control is boosted by the work of the Monitoring Centre team, who operates an online tracking system of the fleet responsible for road cleaning. An inspection vehicle monitors all paved roads allowing for a fast response in case of any deviations.
