Diffuse emissions – which can be defined as unducted emissions from industrial processes – are the biggest challenge in the control of air emissions (the ducted ones already have consolidated online monitoring at ArcelorMittal Tubarão). Their online monitoring in the operating areas, with the use of new technologies, is an initiative that will bring gains to the company environmental management and more efficiency to environmental and operational controls. It is for this reason that ArcelorMittal Tubarão started studies for the implementation of a Diffuse Emissions Monitoring Network, an unprecedented initiative in the ArcelorMittal Group that is going to contribute to the improvement of environmental management results. The project is being developed with the support of the Desert Research Institute (DRI), an American research institution that is a reference in environment control and air monitoring. In the period between January 13 and 17, DRI specialists Dr. John Watson and Dr. Judith Chow visited Tubarão for technical detailing and alignment with the team involved in the study. The DRI is providing technical-scientific guidance to the project as well as defining the best proposal for a solution. The Monitoring Network study is a company initiative that goes beyond the commitment taken on with the signing of the Environmental Commitment Agreement (TCA).

Meeting with IEMA ArcelorMittal Tubarão has organized a meeting between the DRI specialists and the IEMA air quality, licensing and environmental control teams. They presented the DRI background history and purpose, explained the concept of the diffuse emissions monitoring network as well as the benefits that this might bring to the company environmental management. Methodologies for the calculation of emissions in the annual inventories and the development of new technologies for air monitoring were addressed. The meeting contributed to reinforcing with IEMA the company's commitment to air emission control.
