The
state of Espírito Santo will host for the first time an event of the Women
World Bodyboarding Circuit. The ArcelorMittal Wahine Bodyboarding Pro will take
place in the Jacaraípe Beach in Serra on June 20-26.
Over
150 athletes from several countries will participate, including the state
five-time world champion Neymara Carvalho, creator of the event. The
competition will have three categories and the following prizes: US$ 15,000
(Professional), US$ 10,000 (Master) and US$ 5,000 (Pro Junior).
Neymara
Carvalho
In the beginning of June,
the local athlete, who is sponsored by ArcelorMittal Tubarão, won another
important title - champion of the Women Professional category of the Brazilian
Bodyboarding Circuit in the Itacoatiara Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
Neymara, who has just arrived from Chile where she took part in the 1st
event of the Women World Professional Bodyboarding Circuit, has decided to
create an event exclusively for women intended to promote women empowerment and
increase their recognition in the category. “To be able to turn the
ArcelorMittal Wahine Bodyboarding Pro into a world circuit event is a dream
come true. To work for the sport that has given me everything in life is a way
to give back and at the same time encourage the future generations.
Bodyboarding is one of the sports that has brought most happiness to Brazil and
a large part of it came from female athletes. So, it is more than fair to have
an exclusive event for us. It is a way to praise and encourage athletes from
all over the world”, she commented.
First-class
athletes
The sisters Mariana and Isabela Nogueira, who started in the sport
in the 1980s and amassed a number of world titles; Luna Hardman, two-time
Brazilian champion; and Isabela Sousa, four-time world champion are among the
athletes confirmed for the Jacaraípe event. Besides them, Catarina Souza from
Portugal and Sari Ohara from Japan will also take part.
Social
Class
During
the Circuit event over 200 students from the municipal education network will
have the opportunity to take part in bodyboarding classes taught by the
athletes. The initiative intends to foster the development of the sport and
offer cultural exchange between athletes, students and the population in
general.
ArcelorMittal
Wahine Bodyboarding Pro
The
ArcelorMittal Wahine Bodyboarding Pro results from the work of the Neymara
Carvalho Institute, and is sponsored by the Espirito Santo Government and
presented by ArcelorMittal.
The
project was created by Neymara in 2021. “Wahine”, which means woman in the
Hawaiian language, brings into view the connection with the indigenous people
of the Hawaiian islands and inspires the event. Moreover, the Hawaiian Waters
represent one of Neymara’s most emblematic podiums: after leaving Barra do Jucu
she made her name in the international bodyboarding scenario by winning one of
the most difficult disputes of the world championship in the Pipeline Beach in
2006 and 2011.
